Art for God’s Sake Featured Artist Sergio De Giusti and his work, A Faust Symphony
Sergio De Giusti has been a wonderful guide to the Art for God’s Sake committee in helping organize our upcoming event (May 13 – 15). Back in September 2010, we had the opportunity to visit Mr. De Giusti at the Detroit Artist Market for his exhibit, Tenebroso. There was a great crowd and the energy was contagious. Here are a few photos from that evening.
Sergio De Giusti was born in Maniago, Italy. He is a sculptor who received his BFA and MFA from Wayne State University and currently resides in Redford Township, Michigan.
Some of De Giusti’s Michigan commissions include twenty panels for the State of Michigan Library and Archives Building in Lansing, and four bronze panels on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King for Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti. In Detroit, De Giusti’s art appears in The Italian Consulate offices, The Rick Finley USDEA Building, Wayne State University, and The Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Michigan building. Most recently, De Giusti finished 29 bronze reliefs for The Labor Legacy Monument in Hart Plaza.
De Giusti’s awards include a 1991 Michigan Creative Artist Grant, a 1996 Arts Achievement Award from Wayne State University, and a Knighthood from the Republic of Italy. Sergio De Giusti’s work has been exhibited in both the United States and Europe in such places as:
- The Detroit Institute of Art
- The Newark Museum
- The Tampa Museum
- The Minnesota Museum of Art
- The Smithsonian
- The British Museum, London
- The Council of Cultural Affairs, Stockholm
- The Hungarian National Gallery, Budapest
- The Institute of Culture, Zacatecas, Mexico
De Giusti produced bronze panels for the doors of the Church of San Vito in his Italian birthplace; he also created the bronze Christ figure for the processional cross used at the Silverdome Mass during Pope John Paul II’s visit to the Detroit area.
